2010–11 European Golden Shoe

Below are the final rankings for the 2010–11 edition of the European Golden Shoe, awarded by European Sports Magazines. The winner was the Portuguese winger Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored 40 goals in La Liga, breaking the record of most goals ever scored in a season in Spanish first division. He also became the first player to win the European Golden Shoe award in two different championships (Premier League in 2007–08 and La Liga in 2010–11). Lionel Messi, who won the trophy last year, was second with 31 goals.[1]

Multipliers

European Sports Magazines have awarded the Golden Shoe based on a points system that allows players in tougher leagues to win even if they score fewer goals than a player in a weaker league. With this modification goals are ranked differently between the leagues.

The weightings are determined by the league's ranking on the UEFA coefficients, which in turn depend on the results of each league's clubs in European competition over the previous five seasons. Goals scored in the top five leagues according to the UEFA coefficients list are multiplied by a factor of two, and goals scored in the leagues ranked six to 21 are multiplied by 1.5.Thus, goals scored in Serie A, the top Italian football league, will count for more than those scored in the weaker Welsh Premier League, its Welsh equivalent.

Certain European leagues, such as the Russian Premier League and Tippeligaen, problematically follow calendar years rather than the usual August–May model. As a result, their 2010 calendar season is taken to be compared with the 2010–11 seasons in all other European leagues.

Notes

A. ^ Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to win the trophy in two different championships and broke the record of most goals ever scored in a season in La Liga.
B. ^ Mario Gomez was Bundesliga's top goalscorer. It was the first time in his career.
C. ^ Antonio Di Natale was Serie A top goalscorer for the second consecutive season.
D. ^ Moussa Sow was Ligue 1 top goalscorer. It was the first individual title in his career.
E. ^ Dimitar Berbatov and Carlos Tévez were Premier League Golden Boot joint winners. It was the first time that they won this title.
